Excel Tips: How to Generate Random Letters
Figuring out what to type into Excel can sometimes be challenging, especially if you have a large dataset and need an easy way to generate random letters or numbers instead of typing in each one by hand. That’s where Excel’s RAND function comes in handy! But even with the help of this function, typing in each letter by hand can get tedious, so I’ve put together this easy tutorial on how to generate random letters in Excel to make your life easier! Type =rand() into a cell
Not sure how to generate random letters in Excel? No problem! Just type =rand() into a cell and hit enter. This function will generate a random number between 0 and 1. You can then use this number to create a random letter by using the CHAR function. For example, if the cell contains the number 0.5, you would type =CHAR(65+ROUND(0.5*26,0)) to get the letter M. If you want to generate a lowercase letter, just add the L after it like so: =CHAR(65+ROUND(0.5*26,0)+L). There are many other characters available with different functions such as +CHR(), +ASCI(), or +INT(). These allow you to generate numbers of your choice. And there is also a way to insert real ASCII character codes for special symbols like stars, hearts, or musical notes.

And finally click on Custom next to Type and choose one of these formats: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ, which will create an alphabetical list, or 0123456789, which will make a numerical sequence. You can also type in a custom format if needed. Click OK when finished and the letters should now be randomized!
Copy the contents of the cell

First, you could use the RANDBETWEEN function. As long as your range is set to 1-1000000 (or higher), and your column has 10 rows and 10 columns – otherwise it won’t work – you can enter RANDBETWEEN(1,10) into cell B2 and copy down to get an entire column of numbers between 1-10 that correspond with each letter in the alphabet. Next, if you don’t want numbers but rather just letters corresponding with A-Z, then use the LETTER function instead. Just input LETTER(1) into cell B2 and copy down for an entire column of As, etcetera.
Paste it over and over again

Once your spreadsheet has enough random letters, you can easily copy and paste them from that column onto whatever document needs them. And if there are any duplicates (perhaps you don’t want more than one letter z), use SUBSTITUTE() to get rid of those letters by replacing them with another letter from the alphabet.
